Clothes 101: What I Look For in Clothing (Part 2)

[Source: Google Images]

Welcome to the very last installment of Clothes 101! I actually tried to put off this post as long as possible, because I wanted to find a way to continue the series, but alas, I can't think of anything more to put in it, at least not right now. That's okay, there's always plenty to blog about!

As of right now, I'm waiting for my membership to Modly Chic's Friend Friday to be confirmed, so I can start taking part in that. I've been thinking about joining for a long time, and the other day I decided to go for it!

So, this will be a continuation of last week's the most recent post (found here) about what I personally look for when shopping for new clothes. So now that I've covered quality, it's time to talk about versatility! (The good and the bad)

Versatility is another main thing that I look for when buying clothing. For me, versatility in clothing means one thing: I can wear a truly versatile piece several different ways.

I can dress it up with a blazer, I can dress it down with a jean jacket, it would look good paired with a scarf, it would look good with jeans, pants, as a top, as a skirt, etc. I just look for pieces that I can wear many different ways. I find that I get more wear out of my clothing this way, as well as I'm able to be more creative with clothing, and get several different outfits out of one piece.

I also look for pieces that I can layer pretty easily. If you've read my blog for any amount of time, you'll soon realize that I have a ridiculous number of cardigans. And I wear them all the time. That's because they are so versatile.

However, it should be said that there is a downfall to buying clothes and thinking about versatility alone, which is clearly evidenced if you were to look in my closet right now. Versatility, in itself is great, but it's made my closet very boring and vanilla. Most of the pieces that I own are all versatile, but they are all solid colors. No print, no sparkle, nothing really well..fun. Granted, I love many of the pieces in my closet, but my wardrobe is a little unbalanced right now.

So, versatility is good, and essential, in my opinion, to having a well-rounded wardrobe. But, try not to go too crazy (like I did) and make sure you round out the versatility with a few amazing stand-alone pieces that you really love.

I hope you enjoyed my little series! I had a lot of fun writing it, and I know that I will even use the posts as a reference in the future.

Have a fantastic weekend, and stay warm!

I think you could do a segment on caring for your clothes, or a post about donating old clothes, thrifting (I know you did talk about that some), what to do when your 'skinny' jeans don't fit, accessorizing. Sorry if I repeated some you have done, I was just throwing ideas out there. Have a great weekend!

That is such a good point about versatility sometimes equaling "basic". I notice that sometimes as well! I love statement pieces and prefer to purchase those over basics, but at this point I have so much I just keep adding. I have enjoyed your series because after starting this blog I think a lot longer about what items I include in my wardrobe.
